Trail Days 2015

Once again Tom and his crew are gearing up for Trail Days in Damascus. Virginia, May 15-17. 

Trail Days is an annual gathering of hikers from all along the Appalachian Trail. Up to 6000 attendees gather for a weekend of rejoining their friends from past hikes, listening to  blue grass music, enjoying Southern cooking, attending conferences and special events such as speakers and films, and getting deals on all the latest backpacking gear. 

The Town of Damascus rallies for the event every year. Tom will be showing off some of his newest models. He arrives with the team on Thursday afternoon and stays until Sunday afternoon offering super deals.

Tom meets Scout Shops of Asia

Tom was invited to attend the March 5- 8 Asian Pacific Region Scout Shop Conference at Yangmingshan National Park near Taipei, Taiwan. 

Representatives of many Asia Pacific countries including Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, India, the Philippines, the Maldives and Mongolia were in attendance. Tom demonstrated the Expedition Classic and the attendees were fascinated by the automatic closing bottom entry, the way the hammock could be folded into a chair and the comfort.

As Luke and I dipped our toes in the Pacific Ocean to start the transcontinental walk that would take us over the Andes and down the length of the Amazon River, we could hardly stand up. ‘Your pack is ridiculous!’ I mocked. It looked like Luke had an overflowing garden shed strapped to his back.

‘You can talk,’ he retorted. ‘Look at your shoulder straps, they’re torn already.’ It was true: the first day of a two-year expedition and I’d ripped the top shoulder adjuster clean off the harness.

We had more than 45 kilograms in each of our packs: a sign of our lack of any notion of what lay ahead and what we would need to tackle it...
